The name ‘Shallipopi’ has left many people wondering if it is a Nigerian name or a foreign name as it does not sound Nigerian-like.
Amidst curiousity around the name, the bearer, Crown Uzama, has revealed that the name was inspired by the 1994 Chinese kung fu comedy film, Shaolin Popey.
The singer made the clarification in an interview recently.
He said: “I attempted using my birth name, Crown and nicknames like Drip Face as stage name before I finally settle for Shallipopi.”
“I stumbled across the movie by accident while growing up, my mum bought a Tom and Jerry CD for us but it turned out to be the movie Shaolin Popey when we inserted it in our DVD player.”
“I was looking for stage name, so I was like let me coin something from the movie Shaolin Popey, that’s how I came up with my nickname.”
For those who don’t know, Crown Uzama a.k.a Shallipopi, is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter.
He became popular in 2023 after the release of his single – “Elon Musk”. The song is ranked number one on the Nigeria Top 100 Apple Music. Shallipopi is 23years old.
