Nigerian singer, Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D has finally revealed the reasons behind the breakdown of his relationship with his former employers, the famous duo P-Square.
In a recent interview, the artist shared details about the friction that led to his departure from the label.
May D recalled how P-Square initially hesitated to sign him, offering only to support him in the same way they had helped other artists like J Martins and Bracket. However, things took a turn during the shooting of the “Chop My Money” video.
According to May D, while P-Square was already in the process of filming, he was still in Nigeria. It was then that Akon, the renowned American musician, suddenly expressed interest in the video, insisting that May D be present in America for the shoot.
May D described how Akon made it clear that his participation in the video hinged on May D’s presence in the U.S.
When he arrived in America, Akon took May D aside, promising him several potential deals and advising him to reach out once he returned to Nigeria.
Akon also inquired about May D’s contractual relationship with P-Square, to which May D confirmed there were no formal deals in place. Akon assured him that they would discuss the opportunities further upon his return.
Upon his return to Nigeria, May D, in an act of transparency, informed P-Square about the conversation he had with Akon.
However, in hindsight, he expressed regret for sharing the details with them, believing that the disclosure may have contributed to the tensions that eventually led to his exit from the label.
For those who don’t know, May D joined Square Records, the label owned by P-Square, in 2011. However, he parted ways with them in 2012, citing internal disputes as the primary reason for his departure.
