The administration of Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is showing unwavering commitment to advancing Delta State’s tourism sector as part of its MORE Agenda to diversify the state’s economy.
Speaking at a media parley in Asaba, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Culture and Tourism, Dr. Josephine Odunze, emphasized the state government’s efforts to create an enabling environment for tourism investors.
During a two-day tour of tourist sites, Dr. Odunze, accompanied by other officials, visited key locations across the state. The purpose of the tour was to assess and evaluate the potential of various sites for trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
Highlighting the eco-tourism potential of the River Ethiope, Dr. Odunze described it as the deepest inland waterway in Africa, ideal for boat regattas, recreational activities, and research. She also spoke about the potential of McCarthy Beach as a serene retreat for relaxation, as well as the need for upgrades at Warri Gardens.
Other notable locations visited included the Ibru International Ecumenical Centre, Ganagana Island, Mount Ned Resort, and Nelson Mandela Gardens. Each of these sites, Dr. Odunze noted, holds significant opportunities for tourism development and revenue generation for Delta State.
“Looking at all these tourist sites located in different parts of the state, we needed to embark not just on an inspection tour but also to see the potential in these sites. Potential in the area of trade and investment, employment opportunities, and potentials in the area of cultural exchange between states and nations.”
“The film Village and Leisure Park is now a tourist delight as the facility houses so much in leisure including a zoo, a music recording studio and everything needed for film-making, acting, production and post-production stages are all there. The hotels,apartments, and hostels are well equipped for visitors to lodge during their stay in Asaba”.
She called for more government attention to sites like the historic Mungo Park House and Lander Brothers Anchorage, which could be further developed to attract global visitors.
The General Manager of the Delta State Tourism Board, Mrs. Josephine Anyameluhor-Ogbolu, underscored the need for private sector investment to complement the state’s efforts in making Delta a prime tourism destination. She highlighted the state’s biodiversity, eco-system, and scenic beach corridors as key attractions for investors.
Dr. Odunze also pointed out the success of the Asaba Film Village and Leisure Park in drawing tourists and film industry professionals, noting its role in boosting the local economy. She praised Governor Oborevwori for his support, particularly for the 2023 “45 Days of Christmas in Delta” festival, which featured synchronized fireworks, a carnival, and Africa’s tallest Christmas tree.
Other members of the tour included Hon. Huxley Unumadu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Culture; Hon. Gloria Oborevwori, Senior Special Assistant on Tourism; and Onosakponome Donaldson, Special Assistant on Tourism, among others.
