The shocking news of the death of Nigerian music icon, Onyeka Owenu has taken the internet by storm.
Onyeka Onwenu died on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024 at the age of 72.
She died at the 80th birthday celebration of Emzor Pharmaceuticals boss, Stella Okolie on Tuesday in Lagos where she performed.
Sources squealed to us that she slumped after performing at the event, and effort to resuscitate her at the venue of the party did not yield any result.
We gathered she was rushed to Reddington Hospital where doctors confirmed her dead.
Sadly, she was not sick as those who were at the event told us that she performed excellently.
If any prophet had told the music queen that, that would be her last performance, she would possibly have said ‘back to the sender’.
For those who don’t know, Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952. She began her music career in the 1980s and released her first album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981.
Onwenu had since released several albums and singles, including the hit song, “One Love”.
She was also an actress, she acted in several Nollywood films and won so many awards for her contributions to music and film industries.
Onwenu was also a politician. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013. She was appointed Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Onwenu before her demise, held the National Honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). She was awarded the honour in 2011.
