Former Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has been exposed.
The presidential panel that probed the EFCC from May 2015 to May 2020 when Magu was in charge of the agency made the accusation in its final report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2020.
According to the report, the EFCC under Magu allegedly secured 2,446 convictions from 2015 to 2020 out of which 2,115 had to do with Yahoo boys and 85 high-profile cases.
We gathered that investigating officers of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, currently Chairman of EFCC, Shehu Ala and Sambo Mayana submitted executive briefs to Magu seeking permission to take legal steps against high-profile suspects, but he did not grant the approval until the expiration of court orders.
We gathered that the report has been submitted to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and a panel to produce the white paper soon be set up.
According to the investigation panel; “The commission observed that out of the 2446 convictions secured by the EFCC from 2015-2020, only 85 were for high-profile and money laundering cases, that is 3.4% of the total convictions.”
“Also, 2115 representing over 86% of the total convictions (2446) during the period were for suspects popularly referred to as “Yahoo-Yahoo boys” internet fr@udsters, charged for obtaining under false pretence/che@ting and related offences.”
