Glo-Sponsored African Voices Features World Fashion Icons

CNN International’s magazine programme, African Voices Changemakers, will this week feature fashion icons who have exported their trade to the global scene. The 30-minute programme is sponsored by telecommunications solutions provider, Globacom.

The fashionistas are Nkwo Onwuka, Creative Director of Nkwo Design Studios in Nigeria, and South African, Rich Mnisi, the Creative Director, Rich Mnisi,  which is an exclusive label of unique designs.

Onwuka’s Dakala Cloth aims to reduce textile waste by creating limited edition fashion styles from left-over pieces of denim, local cotton materials, end-of-line fabrics and cutting table waste. It also transforms traditional methods of hand craft like weaving, beading, hand dyeing and embroidery to give newness to fabrics and give them modern acceptability.

Mnisi on his part graduated in Fashion Design and Business Management from the South African School of Fashion to found his own brand OATH Studio in 2014, the same year he won the African Fashion International Young designer award at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa.

He is popular with both local and international media owing to his exquisite menswear and womenswear lines and has featured in ELLE, Dazed and Confused and GQ online, having established a young African label to capture the global market.

African Voices Changemakers will be on DSTV channel 401 on Saturday at 9.30 a.m. Repeats of the programme will be broadcast on Sunday at 4.30 a.m., 7.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m., with another   repeat on Monday at 4.00 a.m. A two-part, fifteen-minute repeat will follow on Tuesday and Wednesday at 6.45 p.m.
